TRIP ITINERARY
Apurimac River Black Canyon Full day -1 Day
The tour starts early with pickup from your hotel in Cusco at 5:30 a.m. in one of our own private vehicles driven by an experienced driver.
We leave the city and head southeast. The drive takes about three and a half hours. During the trip we pass several highland communities and cross a 3000-meter area before descending toward the canyon.
Around 9:00 a.m. we reach the put-in point on the bank of the Apurimac River. Here the team unloads the rafts and distributes all personal equipment.
Each participant receives a wetsuit, spray jacket, life jacket, helmet, and paddle. The guides give a complete safety briefing in the language of the group, explaining commands, rescue procedures, and what to do if someone falls in the water.
At approximately 10:30 a.m. we launch the rafts. The river immediately enters a narrow gorge with continuous class III and IV rapids. The guides navigate each rapid with precision while explaining the route.
Around 1:00 p.m. we stop at a quiet beach inside the canyon. The team serves a full lunch prepared with fresh local products. There is time to rest and walk around.
After eating we continue downstream. The second half has several strong rapids and short calm sections where you can observe the rock walls and occasional waterfalls.
The rafting section ends around 2:30 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. at Huallpacachaca Bridge. Participants change into dry clothes.
Our private vehicle is already waiting. The return to Cusco takes about three and a half hours. We drop you off at your hotel between 6:30 p.m. and 7:00 p.m., ending the day.

Frequently Asked Questions Apurimac River Black Canyon Full day -1 Day
Do I need previous rafting experience for this tour?
No previous experience is required. The rapids are class III and IV, which are manageable for fit beginners with good swimming ability. Our guides provide detailed instructions and control the raft at all times. More experienced paddlers will still find the section challenging and enjoyable due to the continuous nature of the rapids.
What is the minimum age to participate?
We normally accept participants from 14 years old. Younger children can be evaluated on a case-by-case basis depending on their size, swimming ability, and the river level at the time. Anyone under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.
Is the river very cold?
Water temperature is usually between 12 and 16 °C. We provide thick wetsuits and spray jackets, so most people feel comfortable once moving. In the hottest months many participants feel fine, while in winter the extra layers are especially appreciated.
Can I bring my phone or camera on the river?
Yes, but only inside a waterproof case or dry bag. We provide small dry bags, although many clients prefer to leave valuables in the vehicle and purchase the professional photos taken by our safety kayaker during the trip.
What happens if the water level is too high or too low?
Our guides check daily flow data. If conditions are unsafe, we cancel the trip and offer a full refund or an alternative date. Safety decisions are final and non-negotiable.
Do you accommodate dietary restrictions?
Yes. Vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, and most common allergies can be accommodated if you inform us at the time of booking. All meals are prepared fresh on the same morning.
Is travel insurance required?
Travel insurance is not obligatory but is very strongly recommended. The policy should cover high-risk sports and medical evacuation from remote areas. Many clients choose an adventure travel policy that includes rafting for added peace of mind.
How fit do I need to be?
You need an average level of physical fitness and the ability to swim. The paddling is active but not extreme. The most demanding aspects are the early start and the total 7–8 hours of activity during the day.
Can I do this tour privately with just my family or friends?
Yes, all our tours are private by default. The pricing already reflects private service, and there are no shared departures. You will never be mixed with strangers; both the vehicle and the raft are exclusively for your group.
What happens if I fall out of the raft?
The guide and the safety kayaker are trained to rescue swimmers quickly. Everyone practices the correct rescue position during the safety briefing. Incidents are rare, but the team is fully prepared.
Is there a weight limit?
The equipment comfortably fits participants up to approximately 120 kg. Heavier participants may be accepted after checking equipment availability in advance.
Do you provide photos or video?
Our safety kayaker takes high-quality photos and short videos during the trip, which are available for purchase at the end of the day. Many clients prefer this option instead of worrying about their own devices.
What time of year has the best water levels?
From May to August the river usually has medium to high flows with exciting rapids. From September to December levels are slightly lower but still offer very good class III–IV rapids and warmer weather.
Can I combine this tour with Machu Picchu the next day?
Yes, many clients do exactly that. We return to Cusco early enough for you to rest and take the train to Aguas Calientes the following morning without any problem.
How do I book and pay the balance?
Send us your details and we will provide a secure payment link. The advance payment secures your date, and the remaining balance is paid in Cusco in cash (USD or Peruvian soles) or by card the day before the tour.

Personal Note from One of Our Guides “I’ve run this canyon more than 300 times. The rapid everyone remembers is ‘Respect’ at kilometer 12 – big wave train, perfect for photos. On low-water days in October you can even surf the wave for minutes. Never gets old.” – Luis, senior guide, Mayuc .
