TRIP ITINERARY
01 Day Rafting Urubamba River Ollanta Section
The day starts when one of MAYUC private vehicles picks you up directly from your hotel door. The driver knows the route perfectly, so the trip stays comfortable and on time. During the ride you pass small Andean communities and farmland that belong to local families.
We reach the private dock in Pachar. Here the team waits with everything ready. Your guide gives a complete safety explanation in English or Spanish – whichever you prefer – and answers every question before you touch the water. You receive a full wetsuit, spray jacket, life jacket, helmet, and paddle. All pieces are cleaned and checked after each use.
The rafts leave the dock. For the next 90 minutes you paddle and float downstream. The river shows mostly Class II and some Class III rapids, perfect for beginners and families. Names like “La Estación” and “El Tobogán” mark the most entertaining sections where the water moves faster. Between rapids the current stays calm enough to look at the mountains and the Inca terraces built centuries ago on both sides of the valley.
A professional safety kayaker follows the group the entire time and helps if anyone needs assistance. The guide in your raft gives commands and keeps everyone coordinated.
The trip ends at Cahicata Bridge. Dry clothes wait in changing rooms at the private dock. After you change, the vehicle takes you to a restaurant in the Sacred Valley. The buffet offers several traditional Peruvian plates prepared with products grown minutes away from the table. Vegetarian options and some international dishes exist if you tell us in advance.
After eating, the same MAYUC vehicle returns you to your hotel. Guests staying in the Sacred Valley arrive around 2:00 p.m.; guests staying in Cusco arrive around 3:00 p.m. A MAYUC representative stays in contact during the whole day to make sure everything runs smoothly.

Frequently Asked Questions Urubamba River Rafting Ollantaytambo – 1 Day
How difficult is the rafting on this section of the Urubamba River?
The Ollantaytambo section has mostly Class II and some Class III rapids. These are moderate and safe for anyone over 8 years old with basic swimming ability. No previous rafting experience is needed, and many families enjoy this trip every week.
Is this trip safe for children?
Children from 8 years old can participate if they know how to swim and weigh at least 25 kg. Smaller life jackets and helmets are provided. The guides are specially trained to work with families and always prioritize safety.
What happens if I cannot swim? You can still join the trip. The life jacket keeps you floating even if you fall into the river, and a safety kayaker stays nearby. Many non-swimmers complete this trip without issues, as long as they feel comfortable wearing the equipment.
Do I need to be in excellent physical shape?
No extreme fitness is required. You paddle only for short periods, and the guide handles most of the steering. People with normal health and moderate activity levels usually enjoy the trip without difficulty.
What is the water temperature like?
The Urubamba River comes from mountain snow, so the water temperature stays between 10 °C and 14 °C (50–57 °F) throughout the year. A full wetsuit, booties, and spray jacket keep most people warm and comfortable.
Can I bring my phone or camera on the river?
It is recommended to leave expensive electronics in the vehicle. For photos, you can purchase the professional photo service or bring a waterproof action camera with a chest mount. Small dry bags are provided, but they are not 100% guaranteed.
What happens if it rains?
Rafting operates rain or shine since you get wet anyway. Heavy rain may raise the river level slightly, but guides check conditions every morning and cancel only in rare cases of real danger. You are informed the day before if cancellation is necessary.
Is lunch really a buffet? How is the food?
Yes, lunch is an open buffet served in a clean restaurant used only by tour groups. The menu includes rice, potatoes prepared in different ways, grilled meats, fresh vegetables, soups, and desserts. All food is freshly prepared that morning using local products, and vegetarian options are always available.
Are the guides certified?
All MAYUC rafting guides hold international rafting certifications, such as IRT, along with rescue and first-aid training renewed every year. Most have more than eight years of experience guiding this exact section of the river.
Can I do this trip if I stay in Ollantaytambo or Urubamba instead of Cusco?
Yes. Pickup and drop-off are available from any hotel in the Sacred Valley at no extra cost. The schedule simply adjusts based on your location.
Is travel insurance mandatory?
Personal travel insurance that covers adventure activities is strongly recommended. Some policies exclude rafting, so it is important to check the details before purchasing insurance.
What happens if I arrive late to pickup?
The vehicle waits a maximum of 10 minutes. After that, the group departs to respect other passengers’ time. If you miss the transport, a taxi to the river can be arranged at your own expense.
Do you provide towels?
Small towels are available for emergencies, but bringing your own medium-size towel is recommended for greater comfort after changing.
Can I pay the balance on the same day?
Yes. Only the advance payment is made online. The remaining balance is paid in cash, either in USD or Peruvian soles, directly to the guide before the activity begins.
Is there an age limit for adults?
There is no upper age limit as long as you are in reasonable health and can get in and out of the raft with minimal assistance. Active guests over 65 years old have successfully enjoyed this trip many times.
Travel Guide about Urubamba River Rafting Ollantaytambo – 1 Day
Weather in the Sacred Valley
Daytime temperature stays between 18 °C and 24 °C most of the year. Mornings can feel cool (10-14 °C). Rain is possible any month, especially December to March, but it usually comes in short afternoon showers.
How the Local People Are
People in the communities along the river are Quechua farmers. They are quiet but very friendly when you greet them with a simple “Allillanchu” or “Buenos días.” A smile goes far.
Typical Food You Find Nearby
Potatoes (more than 300 varieties), corn, quinoa soup, roasted cuy (if you want to try), trout from the river, and plenty of fresh avocados. Street vendors sell roasted corn and stuffed potatoes for less than 5 soles.
Places You Can Visit for Free Near the River
The outside area of Ollantaytambo Inca City (no ticket needed if you only walk the streets), the small market on the main square, and the viewpoint over the river from the bridge.
Where to Eat Cheap
Small local restaurants called “picanterías” in Ollantaytambo offer a full menu (soup + main + drink) for 12-18 soles. Look for places full of Peruvian workers at lunchtime – that’s the best sign.
How to Dress All Year Round
Quick-dry clothes under the wetsuit, warm layer for the ride back (fleece or light jacket), comfortable closed shoes for walking on rocks, hat, and sunglasses. Bring a light rain jacket December to April.
Physical Effort and Health Requirements
You paddle actively for 2-4 minutes at a time, then rest while floating. The main effort is getting in and out of the raft on the river bank (some rocks can be slippery). Anyone with recent shoulder or back injuries should consult a doctor first. No altitude sickness risk because the whole trip stays below 3000 meters.
