Salkantay Trek + Humantay Lake and Inca Trail 4 days

Salkantay Trek + Humantay Lake and Inca Trail 4 days

The Salkantay Trek is a remote trail that is a good alternative to the Inca Trail, it has much more spectacular views and with different ecological floors we will make our hike between lakes and impressive snow-capped mountains like Salkantay and the turquoise Humantay Lake, we will pass through rivers and subtropical areas with abundant vegetation and varied fauna. This trail is an excellent option for those who do not wish to be on the more congested routes and in a faster way, or for those who are looking for an alternative when there are no longer spaces available on the traditional Inca Trail.

This impressive Salkantay Trek (about 50 km long) is the “soft option” from the site of Challacancha, although it is considered soft you have to consider that you reach an altitude of 4,750 m) and then you reach some wooded valleys, up to an altitude of 1,500m.

On the second day from Soray we will ascend for half an hour, we will walk in an area known as “Siete Culebras” (Seven Snakes) because of its zigzagging path. We will reach the flattest peak in Salkantay, and descend gently to the small lake Soirococha.

The step that we will see a little further on, which is the view of Salkantay that looks at our sight is comforting. The real pass is at an altitude of 4.750m is reached after 3-4 hours of walking, the road is marked by some stone buildings, known as “Apachetas” by the local people that are increasing as each traveler is adding to thank the Inca Gods (known as APUS) to thank for a safe journey

From here we will make a descent to the valley and then arrive to the area of Huayrajmachay (Eye of the Wind); from here we will appreciate the shape of the snow-capped mountain of Humantay; from here we will make a walk in the middle of bamboo forests and beautiful flora; from here we will take a bus to arrive to the town of Santa Teresa where we will enjoy the thermal waters of Cocalmayo (A real prize for our feet and body) and then visit the Inca city of Machupicchu.

  • Level: Moderate to difficult; good physical condition necessary.
  • Location: Cordillera Vilcabamba Nevado Salkantay and Machu Picchu
  • Total Distance: 50 Km / 40,4 miles
  • Description This walk allows you to appreciate different ecological floors from the punas to the jungle brow, as well as a great biodiversity of flora and fauna (birds).
  • Season: April to November
