TAMBOPATA CANDAMO RIVER RAFTING, Peru rainforest (9D/8N)

The Tambopata Candamo Reserved Zone (TCRZ) is a 3.7 million acre reserve in southeastern Peru created in 1990 to protect the biological diversity of the entire watersheds of the Tavara and the Candamo Rivers and most of the watershed of the Tambopata River.

Over 1,300 bird species (including 32 parrot species - 10% of the world's total), 200 mammal species, 90 frog species, 1,200 butterfly species, 600 leaf beetles and 10,000 species of higher plants are within the zone. One of the four top commercial Macaw Licks are within the zone, next to the Tambopata Research Center and Lodge. Within the area are several native groups, including the Ese'eja native community, have been actively enlisted to help preserve the remaining wild populations.

One of the highlights of the reserve is the Colpa de Guacamayos which is one of the largest natural clay licks in Peru. These copper-colored cliffs attract thousands of  macaws and parrots each day who come to feed on the mineral salts contained in this area.

The Tambopata-Candamo Research can only be accessed by boat, usually from the town of Puerto Maldonado the capital of the Madre de Dios department. There are daily flights from Puerto Maldonado to and from Cusco usually arriving and departing early in the morning. When booking a tour with a jungle lodge check to find if the flight is included. In most instances the tours offered start and finish in Puerto Maldonado although transfers to and from the airport for connecting flights are included. There are several airlines operating this route and the price is about $60 each way. If possible, purchase these flights as part of a package trip from the various tour operators. In this way if the flight from Cusco is cancelled you are more likely to get a refund for your accommodation. Check the contract first.

This unique white-water rafting expedition takes place in one of the most remote corners of the Peruvian rainforest, the Tambopata Candamo Natural Reserve, at the edge of the Amazon Basin, near the Bolivian and Brazilian borders . This trip has all of the ingredients of an epic and unforgettable ¨journey-of-a-lifetime¨

Our expedition starts on the shores of Lake Titicaca, the highest navigable lake in the world at 15,480 meters above sea level. From the town of Juliaca, we travel across the altiplano into high tropical rain forest, where we begin our rafting journey. We leave behind the last signs of pioneer farmers, gold -panners and human settlements, as we enter the magical and mysterious world of the Amazon rainforest. For seven days, we raft through a natural habitat seeing a high diversity of plants and animals, including 8 species of macaws, 13 species of monkeys, 530 species of birds, ocelot, jaguar, capybara, tapir, caiman, and the giant river otter

Running Class III and IV rapids, we finally arrive at the famous macaw lick (see National Geographic; January 1994). Waking-up at our campsite at dawn, we have a perfect view of these magnificent birds. From here, we begin our return journey by a motorized dugout canoe, to the frontier town of Puerto Maldonado and then by airplane to Cusco.
