PARACAS RESERVE - NAZCA LINES & BALLESTAS ISLANDS (2D/1N)
The Nazca Lines are gigantic mysterious drawings done at the desert floor about 600 years ago and are only visible from the sky. Theories about their origin go from far out ones, regarding extraterrestrial intervention, to being a gigantic astronomical calendar and its relationship with a water cult.
The Nazca lines are geoglyphs and geometric line clearings in the Peruvian desert. They were made by the Nazca people, who flourished between 200 BCE and 600 CE along rivers and streams that flow from the Andes. The desert itself runs for over 1,400 miles along the Pacific Ocean. The area of the Nazca art is called the Pampa Colorada (Red Plain). It is 15 miles wide and runs some 37 miles parallel to the Andes and the sea. Dark red surface stones and soil have been cleared away, exposing the lighter-colored subsoil, creating the "lines". There is no sand in this desert. From the air, the "lines" include not only lines and geometric shapes, but also depictions of animals and plants in stylized forms. Some of the forms, including images of humans, grace the steep hillsides at the edge of the desert.
Also
on this tour we include a visit to the PARACAS RESERVE AND
NATIONAL PARK and the BALLETAS ISLANDS, known as the Little
Galapagos, for their abundant marine life, such as seals,
cormorants, penguins and many sea birds, some endemic to this
region, like the Inca Turn.
You will have some time to spend on the Beach and enjoy the
wonderful weather at the Bay of Paracas Reserve
The Nazca Lines are located in the Nazca Desert, a high arid plateau that stretches between the towns of Nazca and Palpa on the pampa (a large flat area of southern Peru). The desolate plain of the Peruvian coast which comprises the Pampas of San Jose (Jumana), Socos, El Ingenio and others in the province of Nasca, is 400 Km. South of Lima, covers an area of approximately 450 km2, of sandy desert as well as the slopes of the contours of the Andes. They cover nearly 400 square miles of desert. Etched in the surface of the desert pampa sand about 300 hundred figures made of straight lines, geometric shapes most clearly visible from the air.
