EXTREME WHITEWATER RAFTING , APURIMAC RIVER 9D/8N

This section of the Apurimac River,with excellent whitewater runs through the last high Andean ranges that break down to the jungle. Going though different ecological niches , carving its way through different rock formations , all the way to though the cloud forest to the Amazon plain.

We start our Rafting trip , near the ruins of Choquequirao, (Golden Cradel) , were the last Inca Emperor, Manco Inca I, organized its resistance against the Spanish Conquistadores. We put -Inn, at Puente Rosalina, the bridge that takes you across the Apurimac River to visit the Citadel , there is a nice "Albergue" being build due to the increased numbers of people that are visiting this area. The walls of the river rise 1,800 meters toward the Ruins. It is definitely a deep canyon. There are several Water falls plummeting into the River. The Rapids the first couple of days are continuous class IV and IV+ with a few
class Vs.

We already started naming several of the rapids and on day one you have a class IV called SAMANI, because we saw this raccoun type of animal, Then the "El Canal" a clean class V. After about 3 hours in the water scouting and running the rapids we arrive to Puente San Ignacio ,there is another bridge that takes you across the Apurimac River and up to Choquequirau.
There are Rapids called "LLama Loca " class IV, "Flip Line" class IV, and "Giganton" a very long class IV+ rapid. The more we get to know this area we will find more names to the other Rapids.
The third day on the river , it starts opening up and there are more flat water stretches of water and then a big Rapid. So it is more of a drop pool. There area a couple of places that we have to line up the boats and two rivers plunge into the Apurimac at river left, the Rio Pachachaca, and the Rio Pampas adding more volume to the river.
There are more sandy beaches and we camp at the " La Cueva ", a beautiful sandy beach with a spectacular cave near the water. The scenery is changing dramatically and the shore line
is more green.
The following day we float with a completely different scenery , the shore line is very dry , the river widens up , more flats with big rapids such as "El Pescador", " La Oreja ". This area looks like Arizona or New Mexico, dry and with cactuses . Next day we have to do a portage over "PAHUAJ" , and afterwards there are 3 good class IV rapids and it starts turning into high Jungle very fast. It is warm here and we no longer need the wet suits. There is plenty of fish and fishing is good. We will encounter more class IV rapids and more water falls. There is a total of 21 water falls that enter the river on river right and 12 more on river left.

Many sandy beaches to camp , we will float through what we called "The black Canyon" with jungle on top, really pretty.The following day more jungle and we arrive to the first little town where a dough out motor canoe with a big engine , will take us down river for about 3 hours to the town of Santa Rosa, the next day we drive for 7 hours going up from the jungle to the Colonial Andean town of Ayacucho, were we spend the night in a hotel. Next Day early morning flight to Lima.
