Native Communities of the Andes

The lares trek, take place on a hidden valley that very few outsiders have ever entered. The llama shepherds and weavers that inhabit some of the villages of this obscure place, of high andean glaciers and brilliant lakes, wear the clothes of andalucia, spain in the 16th century! This garb was imposed on them by the conquistadors, who extracted the tribute of their colorful textiles.
Their isolation has allowed this tradition to continue. You will be furnished with porters that can carry up to 35 pounds. You will also get double-occupancy sleeping tents; kitchen, dining and latrine tents; and the services of professional english-speaking guides and cooks. Early morning a private vehicle will pick us up at our hotel and take us through the Sacred Valley of the Incas and to the head of the trail ,where you start the trek. Our hike begins in a fertile valley and follows the Huaran river up through a mountain corridor. After walking for about 4 hours, we arrive to the stone houses with thatched-roofs of the Cancahacancha community (11,000').
Camp after the town.

Today we pass two brilliant high lakes, Suirococha an Yaruccocha, a beautiful waterfall feeds the second. Here we can see several bird species including Andean ibis, Andean geese and flamingoes.
You will go over a pass at 14,108, high above the clouds, with spectacular views of the massive Pituseray and Chicon glaciers. Having trek for about 5 miles you will camp near a small village of stone huts with thatched roofs. We have a treat in store! A ritual performed to celebrate fiestas or the arrival of outsiders will be performed. A lamb will be butchered and cooked in the ancient manner.
The men of the village all have specific task in the preparation, which is accompanied by thanks to Pachamama, Mother Earth. It is an amazing thing to see

Over the high point we continue downhill until we reach the community of Cuncani (3,886 m/12,746 ft.), a picturesque village, similar to the previous campsite. This was the last refuge of the “Royal Panakas”, an Inca sect. After our picnic lunch continue past a narrow valley, full of spectacular giant stones, to reach the Trapiche Valley floor, with the trail slowly descending until we arrive at the Lares hot springs (3261 m / 10,696 ft.), where we will camp and enjoy the medicinal waters.
